The Chickens at MEA

It is important to understand that all of our chickens are hens (female chickens). This is due to many reasons. The primary concerns legality, there are city regulations about the amount and type of chickens you can have. Roosters are too loud and would disrupt neighbors to our school.

Cleopatra

Cleo, for short, is a beautiful Egyptian Fayoumi. She doesn't prefer to be picked up, but she is still very friendly and loves eating treats from your hand!

Originally, our flock was 5 hens strong. Zera, passes away fall of 2023 because of an unnexpected predator. We have since secured the coop to make it more safe. Chris passed away in early April of 2023 due to pancreatic cancer. We also had two other friendly hens at MEA. Unfortunately, they passed away late summer/early fall of 2021. Ophelia died of Marek's Disease and Aquafina died of egg peritonitis caused by cancer. Here they are:

Zera

Zera was a friendly Speckled Sussex who doesn't mind being picked up! She is the fluffiest of the chickens.

Chris

Chris was a white leghorn who loved to eat bugs! She had a floppy, large comb that was bright red.

Ophelia

Ophelia was an Ameraucana who layed colorful eggs. She was a curious chicken who enjoyed looking around. She also could fly the highest of all the chickens.

Aquafina

Aquafina was a Plymouth Rock and a sweet chicken ready for anything!
